Stepped Care Peer Support Worker Banyule Community Health

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Part time – 3 days per week with flexible days of work
  • Fixed term – twelve months contract.
  • Role within supportive multidisciplinary team

Banyule Community Health Wellbeing and Support programs are looking for two experienced peer support workers to join our established multidisciplinary teams.    These positions would be working with other peer support workers, care coordinators, mental health and AOD counsellors and mental health nurses, who deliver integrated and consumer focussed support through provision of highly tailored individual and group-based care, delivered face-to-face or via tele-health. These roles will be based from West Heidelberg and Greensborough sites and deliver outreach services to our community.

You are keen to contribute your mental health and/or AOD lived experience to engage with people who are struggling with their mental health, AOD and co-morbid issues. 

You will work to engender hope and will build supportive and respectful relationships with people that nurture and encourage recovery-oriented thinking and behaviour. 

You are empathetic, a good problem solver, able to work independently and as part of a strong team, as well as committed to positive client outcome. 

About the role

Peer Support Workers are highly valued members of the established LIFT and Head to Health Mental Health Stepped Care programs and AOD Programs. 

Client work will be tailored and individualised to people’s needs and will promote self-awareness through building shared understandings.  Peer Support workers will work closely and collaboratively with LIFT, Head to Health, AOD and other wellbeing and support teams at BCH to support people with a welcoming, responsive and flexible approach.  Considerable training and supervision will be provided, including regular opportunities for peer support workers to come together from different streams to learn from each other.

What you will need to be successful in this role: 

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in providing peer support to people who are struggling with their mental health and/or AOD problems. 
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in providing peer support to people who in addition to struggling with mental health and AOD issues, are also experiencing co-morbid issues such as gambling, family violence, family breakdown, physical health issues, unemployment, legal issues, homelessness 
  • Lived experience of recovery from mental health and/or AOD addiction. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in mental health and AOD or a related health or human services field is desirable 
  • Training and experience in the provision of intentional peer support is desirable
  • Experience working in mental health or AOD services is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organise, problem solve and work effectively, both independently and as a team member 
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and respond to change and manage challenges
  • Ability to work in partnership with a wide range of services
  • Ability to use computer software for administrative purposes, to record client notes and input data
  • Skills in facilitating/co-facilitating groups is desirable.
