About This Opportunity

To provide students with assistance and support through all aspects of student life. This includes advice on financial assistance, accommodation, diversity, disability, inclusion and health and wellbeing related issues. In addition, to specifically provide:

In addition:

  • Assistance to students with transitional and adjustment issues so that they can achieve their academic and personal goals through individual appointments or group programs.

  • Students with a disability, advice and guidance to build an appropriate and reasonable plan of assistance and adjustments to enable full participation in the learning experience as far as is reasonably possible.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Support international students through execution of support programs, presentations and 1-1 appointments, including international students’ orientation and departure sessions.

  • Support students with a disability or access requirements through the delivery of 1-1 appointments, support programs and other initiatives that support the initiatives of broadening access and inclusion of students within UQ.

  • Deliver on strategies to support students with a permanent or temporary disability, including illness and injury, during their studies.

  • Provide advice to University staff on requirements, within the University environment, for students with a disability and formulate strategies to address these requirements.

  • Play an active role in contributing to the regular evaluation of support programs to ensure ongoing service improvement.

  • Provide support through individual consultations to international students on a range of concerns related to transition to living and studying in Australia and the University of Queensland.

  • Prepare and update information materials including print and web-based materials.

  • Provide assistance in crisis situations.

  • Perform administrative duties such as case management and record keeping, correspondence and report writing.

  • Engage proactively with academic and administration staff to raise awareness and inform on student issues and concerns.

  • Contribute proactively to ensure effective operation of the student advice teams.

  • Develop and maintain networks or partnerships with other staff of the University, student groups, government departments and other agencies on international student support services and issues.

  • Consult with the University’s academic and professional staff on matters relating to student disability and provide advice on reasonable accommodations within the academic environment.

  • Work with colleagues across the institution and in the community as required in support of the student needs identified.

This is a full-time continuing position.

At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871.95 to $91,158.90, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $99,300.18 to $106,655.91 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases.

About You

Essential

  • A degree in a relevant area (e.g. Social Work, Sociology, Behavioural Science, or Psychology) and at least one years subsequent relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training;

  • Strong organisational skills, including planning, scheduling, prioritisation required in the management of multiple events

  • A demonstrated high level of communication and negotiation skills

  • Ability to exercise critical judgment and provide relevant advice to staff at all levels

  • Skills to work in an electronic environment and deliver on-line web enabled information

  • Experience in establishing, developing and maintaining relationships with those outside the immediate work unit

  • Tact, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality

  • A demonstrated ability to understand human relations and behaviour and to assist students in dealing with their concerns.

  • Experience with working and liaising with people from a range of backgrounds including.

  • Experience in working with and understanding the needs of people from non-English-speaking backgrounds and/or with a disability.

  • Ability to work co-operatively and supportively as a member of a team

  • Positive attitude / outlook to relate to people from varied backgrounds and ages.

Desirable

  • A minimum of one years’ experience and demonstrated ability to provide welfare, academic or disability support services, particularly in a tertiary or related environment.
