Student Assist – Education and Welfare Officer Murdoch University Guild of Students

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Murdoch University Guild of Students provides representation and services to the student body.  We are seeking an experienced and motivated person to join the Student Assist Department in this part-time role, to provide advocacy, welfare advice, support and assistance to students on academic issues.

Previous experience in the area of client service within the Higher Education Sector will be highly regarded.  The position requires the ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures, and to interact effectively with academics and students.  The successful applicant will possess strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills and be a team player.

The core responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating the emergency assistance program for students struggling financially.
  • Providing individual assessment and an advice service to students in relation to income support, welfare rights, and other social matters.
  • Providing an individual advice service to members in relation to academic issues.

Remuneration: $80,565.51[pro-rata] Part-time, 30 hours per week + 11% employer superannuation

This position will be offered on a 1yr contract initially with a view to permanent employment for the right candidate. SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Relevant undergraduate degree (social sciences, community development, psychology, social work).
  • Experience in client contact work in an advisory/advocacy capacity, preferably within a community-based organisation.
  • Well-developed organisational, research and administrative skills with the ability to analyse and advise on University policy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong advocacy and mediation skills.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation (Higher education support act) and appeal processes.
  • Knowledge of educational, social and welfare services.
  • Commitment to the principles of unionism and collective organisation.
  • Sound knowledge of software packages (Cliniko, Microsoft Office, Formstack, Excel).
  • ‘C’ class manual driver’s licence.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Universities and how they function.
  • Experience in supervising.
