The Role

Permanent, working up to 76 hours per fortnight 

TasTAFE is currently looking for an enthusiastic and passionate individual with relevant experience and qualifications to join our Student Experience team as a Student Counsellor in 2023.  This position will be based at our Alanvale Campus in Launceston.  

The purpose of the Student Counsellor position is to provide students with guidance on career and course selection, provide short term personal counselling services and referral to external agencies to minimise the impact of psychological and/or emotional factors upon student academic performance and to assist student achievement of their educational and vocational goals.

The Student Counsellor is also responsible for effective and efficient provision of careers, crisis and personal counselling, and information related to advisory services and enrolment support.

An existing TasTAFE employee employed under a copied state instrument, or an employee who has been employed at TasTAFE in the past three months, if successful, would be appointed at the relevant classification and salary in the copied state instrument.

About  You

These are the capabilities required to undertake the role successfully:

  1. An understanding of the needs and constraints experienced by the broad range of people entering the organisation and established proficiency and expertise in counselling, mediation, advocacy career guidance and staff consultancy, with demonstrated skills in assessment and appropriate strategies to address student problems.
  2. Demonstrated high level interpersonal communication skills with the ability to relate to students with a high degree of sensitivity and to staff in a professional, cooperative manner.
  3. Extensive experience in providing career and course information, preferably in a vocational education and training environment.
  4. Well-developed self-management skills including flexibility and a capacity to remain impartial and manage a range of different tasks simultaneously.
  5. Well-developed skills in problem solving, liaison, negotiation, conflict resolution and the ability to exercise sound judgement.

Evidence of meeting the following requirements for the role will need to be provided prior to starting:

  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People
  • Evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination or an approved exemption 

The following requirements are desirable: 

  • Experience in a vocational and education training environment.
  • A degree in Social Work, Psychology or similar
  • Eligibility for membership of an appropriate professional association e.g. AASW, APA.
