Student Counsellor – Upper Primary St Peters Lutheran College

We are seeking a part time Student Counsellor who will provide professional counselling services to Upper Primary Years (Years 5 and 6) students at our St Peter Lutheran College Indooroopilly campus.  The role remit involves supporting the wellbeing and mental health of students through the provision of professional counselling and preventative/proactive initiatives, including working with parents and caregivers and external services as required. This is a permanent part-time position (0.5 FTE) including some rotation on term breaks.

In the Student Counsellor role, the successful candidate will:

  • provide appropriate counselling services addressing the social, emotional, behavioural and developmental needs of students;
  • collaborate as appropriate with relevant pastoral and academic staff in relation to the individual needs of students;
  • provide programs responsive to the pastoral and psychosocial needs of the College Community in support of students;
  • ensure knowledge and understanding of the nature of the counselling service and referral processes are readily available within the College community;
  • acquire and utilise current professional knowledge to enhance the counselling services provided; and
  • work closely and collaboratively with Counselling peers to support and enhance the service across the College

About you

  • You hold Student Counselling and/or qualifications with appropriate memberships, as well as demonstrated experience in a similar role/setting.
  • You have demonstrated understanding of child development, with proven experience in providing social, emotional and behavioural interventions for children and their families appropriate to upper primary years 5 and 6.
  • You have a demonstrated understanding of confidential and professional boundaries within the scope of Counselling practices in a school environment.
  • You have demonstrated experience building trust and rapport with students, families and colleagues in an educational setting.
  • You can select and use appropriately, a wide range of counselling and support strategies to suit the emotional and psychological needs of a diverse range of students.
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills and can communicate sensitively and confidentially with students, parents and other staff.
  • You embrace opportunities to reflect upon your professional practice and further develop your own skills and knowledge across a variety of different areas.
