Student Support Officer (Youth Worker) – Positions for 2024
Horizons College is a non-state, Special Assistance School based in Caboolture that is committed to assisting those young people for whom mainstream education is not meaningful. The school offers relevant and engaging curriculum, and features small class sizes, daily one-on-one support, flexible learning environments and a positive educational experience for its students.
We are looking for suitably qualified and enthusiastic Youth Workers to support the personal, social, behavioural and emotional development of our students. The Student Support Officer manages a caseload of students executing best practise strategies to enhance student wellbeing and engagement.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supporting the personal, social, behavioural and emotional development of students to help keep them engaged in their education
- Assisting students to develop life skills, confidence, positive self-esteem, interpersonal skills and healthy relationships
- Making appropriate referrals and recommendations for ongoing support
- Supporting students in restorative conversations and mediation as required
- Participating in meetings with students and their parents/carers
- Providing effective supervision of students during breaks and undertaking other supervision duties as required including organising lunch club activities
- Maintaining documentation and records, including completing accurate and timely reports and file notes
ABOUT YOU
To thrive in this position, you will demonstrate:
- qualifications relevant to the position, e.g. a Certificate IV in Youth Work
- previous experience as a youth worker, ideally supporting secondary students
- a current Working with Children Check
- a passion for working with young people and an understanding of the factors affecting their lives
- excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- high level organisational and planning skills
- an ability to show initiative and work as a team member
- an ability to respond appropriately to challenging behaviours
- knowledge of local support services
- computer skills
