The Organisation:

Youth Off The Streets is a not-for-profit youth organisation that provides safety, support and opportunities for young people to build a positive future. We offer crisis accommodation and housing services, alternative high school education, alcohol and other drugs counselling, youth justice support, life skills and employment programs, cultural support and community engagement, among other services. We focus on early interventions that empower young people and strengthen communities.

Not all children and young people thrive in mainstream schools. Our registered and accredited independent high schools offer a flexible alternative for students in Years 9–12.

We operate six independent high schools that are registered and accredited with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Youth Off The Streets is also a member of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW).

The Role:

Youth Off The Streets is looking for a Part Time Student Support Worker for 4 days per week starting in Term 1 2024 on a maximum term contract till end of Term 4 2024. 

About us:

  • Our schools aim to offer young people who have become disengaged from education an opportunity to achieve either the Record of School Achievement, Higher School Certificate or the skills they require to go on to further vocational education, apprenticeships and/or employment.
  • A majority of our success is based on the provision of individual learning adjustments within and outside of the classroom. 

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Advising students on matters relating to educational and individual needs.
  • Encouraging the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents/carers in school programs and their participation in forums, school activities and decision-making.
  • Maintaining effective relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents/carers and the wider Indigenous community
  • Creating, advising and facilitating pathways through school to further training and employment
  • Management and coordination of external mentoring programs
  • Assisting staff in developing and implementing an appropriate curriculum that respects and includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives for all students and specifically one which meets the needs of Indigenous students
  • Facilitating appropriate programs to develop cultural identity and confidence for all students within the school community
     

The essential criteria for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Minimum Certificate IV qualification in Youth Work, Community Services or Certificate IV School-based Education Support
  • Experience working in the youth sector and/or education setting
  • Demonstrated networking ability with knowledge of community development issues
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating confidence in engaging young people
  • Ability to build supportive relationships with students and families within the school
  • Ability to provide individual guidance and assistance to student in the classroom setting
  • Understanding of adolescent development, drug use and behaviour
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles that underpin a child safe organisation including mandatory child protection procedures
