Student Wellbeing Advisor/Counsellor

Appointment:    Term 4 2023 start (term time only), 12 months maximum term with the possibility of continuation

Hours of Work:    12 hours (9am – 3.30 pm, over 2 days per week subject to a 6 month probationary period.  Some out of hours work may be required

Rockingham Montessori School is a co-educational Pre Kindy – Yr 12 School with 330 students located in Rockingham and Port Kennedy.  The Montessori approach is based on mutual respect and co-operation.  Our School is small by design and has a wonderful community feel where every child and family are treated as individuals. 

Description:

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Student Wellbeing Advisor/Counsellor to join our exceptional team.  The Student Wellbeing Advisor/Counsellor will work across the 3 sites providing care and support for students 3 years – 18 years old. 

The Student Wellbeing Advisor/Counsellor will apply the highest standards of professional conduct and, within the constraints of confidentiality, maintain ongoing communication with staff and families to ensure a high quality of care. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Foster the wellbeing of students, staff and the wider school community 
  • Assist students to cope with the developmental concerns of adolescence via individual and group counselling 
  • Assist students with issues such as anger management, study technique, inter-personal skills, self-image, grief, bullying, tobacco, alcohol, drug and vaping abuse 
  • Consult with teacher and Management regarding case management of students who exhibit behavioural problems or learning difficulties 
  • Respond holistically to student, parent and staff issues and refer to other agencies and service providers as appropriate 
  • Promote and support a safe and nurturing environment for students which is free from harassment and discrimination, fosters respect and valuing of differences, assists students to accept responsibility for their own behaviour and achieve self-control 
  • Help develop and/or participate in programs designed to enhance student wellbeing 
  • Assist staff with regards to self-improvement for students via: mediation, cooperative behaviour, stress management etc 
  • Maintain a system for accurate and comprehensive record keeping that complies with school policies and legislative requirements 
  • Refer disclosures or concerns covered by Mandatory Reporting Requirements to the Principal and advise the Principal of any safety or wellbeing issues related to students 

Qualifications

  • Formal qualifications as registered Psychologist, School Counsellor or Social Worker 
  • Working with Children Check 
  • Mandatory Reporting and Protective Behaviours training 
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative relationships and to communicate, mediate and negotiate with students, staff and families 
  • Demonstrated application of all current, relevant legislation and legal requirements 
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise positive intervention strategies and pro-mental health programs
