Job Description
Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) works to support and improve the social, emotional, cultural and economic wellbeing and outcomes of Aboriginal People in 6 LGA’s across the Lower Hunter Valley.
As an Early Intervention Youth and Family Worker you will provide support to vulnerable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, children 0- 12yrs and young people 12 – 17yrs within the Maitland, Cessnock and Dungog LGAs. The position is full time and will be contracted on a 12 monthly bases. The position will be conveniently located out of both the Mindaribba LALC’s East Maitland and Cessnock Offices.
Role
This is an identified position where you will be using a culturally appropriate strength-based approach to work one-on-one with parents/carers, children and young people as well as facilitating groups. You will also complete safety and risk assessments, identify risk, and complete referrals to external multi-disciplinary service providers. This role will also require you to create and maintain a collaborative approach to service delivery and case planning with external providers.
The early intervention case workers seek and work to prevent young people and children from entering or escalating into the child protection system. This model includes supporting children, young people and their parents and carers by working with a behaviour change model, using a therapeutic approach to build the capacity and problem-solving skills.
Your role will be to support a caseload of children, young people and their families in order to stop the breakdown of family and the removal of children into into child protection or the justice system. You will undertake assessments, and develop and implement interventions that identify strengths as well as areas of risk.
The role will involve
- Maintain a caseload of 15-20 families and young people at most times, including conducting regular home visits
- Use reflective practice and regularly engage in Group Supervision with the team
- Work with the leadership team to develop, implement, maintain and consistently review an evidence-informed practice model
- Work in collaboration with families and other stakeholders to develop plans to address identified Risk of Harm and Risk of Significant Harm concerns
Criteria
- Degree or Tertiary level qualifications or equivalent in a position relevant to the field of work, a Certificate 3, or extensive community knowledge and work experience.
- Those seeking a traineeship or who are part way through their training should also apply and stipulate their interest and qualification area.
- Previous Casework experience (specifically in early intervention or a child protection related program).
- Demonstrated Cultural competence and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families.
- Understanding of child protection legislation and early intervention.
The requirements for this role include;
- Must Identify as an Australian First Nations Person and have the ability to prove their Aboriginality
- Current Driver’s License
- Current Working with Children Check
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Must be willing to undertake and be cleared via a National Police Check through Mindaribba LALC.
- Must be willing to undertake a Medical Examination including drug test
