About the role:
A unique and rewarding opportunity to join Box Hill Institute in partnership with Corrections Victoria as our Vocational Counsellor! This position is based at our North West Metro prisons (including Melbourne Remand Centre, Melbourne Assessment Prison and Dame Phyllis Frost Centre).
As the Vocational Counsellor, your primary role will be to ensure that effective learning and vocational pathways are established for students through the conduct of Vocational counselling sessions and development of individual learning plans. You will have the opportunity to interview individuals to establish career goals and link these goals with Prison Industry work and education.
Your role will also consist of providing professional consultancy to management and teaching staff regarding student issues, intervention and referral strategies as well as specialist areas such as cultural sensitivity, disability and mental illness. You will also be contributing to a range of support programs and projects to provide suitable vocational programs to students as well as developing materials to support vocational counselling and plans appropriate to prison site resources including options and pathways upon release from prison.
This role forms part of a highly rewarding project where Box Hill Institute, in partnership with Corrections Victoria, provide prisoners the opportunity to complete Nationally Recognised Training courses to achieve qualifications and improve their confidence, life skills and increase employability once released from prison.
Note this is a casual position (2 days per week) until June 2024. Hourly rate is $44.13 plus superannuation.
About You:
- Graduate Certificate in Career Development Practice and be an associate member of the CEAV or equivalent (essential)
- Demonstrated counselling experience with specialist knowledge in vocational training, mental health issues and learning skills
- Ability to collect, analyst and use labour market and career information to assist with counselling and advice to clients
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs and ability to organise information and manage student records/reporting
- A strong client focus; confident in building client relationships, providing advice and training to a diverse range of people
- High level interpersonal skills with a high standard of verbal and written communication
