headspace provides support to young people aged 12-25 experiencing mild to moderate or emerging mental health issues. The multidisciplinary team at headspace Bega work to improve health, social, vocational and educational outcomes for young people.
 
Grand Pacific Health is the lead agency of headspace Bega.  We are a not-for-profit, primary health care organisation providing locally-tailored, high quality physical and mental health services across NSW and the ACT.
 
About the position
 
The Youth Counsellor will provide early intervention counselling and support services to young people who have or may be at risk of developing a mental health and/or substance use disorder or have economic and social recovery needs. 
 
The primary purpose of the Youth Counsellor is to deliver the new clinical stream at headspace Bega; the Brief Interventions Stream (BIS). Under the BIS, the Youth Counsellor will deliver low intensity, short to medium-term therapeutic interventions designed to build skills and coping strategies. 
 
The program will be delivered individually and also in group program settings, including in schools and from the headspace centre. 
 
This position requires working closely with the other members of the headspace Bega team and external service providers and works to maximise care outcomes for young people referred to headspace Bega. 
 
This is a fixed-term, part-time opportunity (22.5 hours per week) to 30 June 2025. Hours and days are negotiable.

We are looking for someone with:

  1. Passion and experience in working with young people
  2. Qualifications in Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Counselling, Psychology, or other relevant field as well as eligibility for registration with the appropriate professional organisation/authority as required. Applicants working toward such qualifications may also be considered. 
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the health and wellbeing needs of young people with mental health and/or substance use problems.
  4. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills including the ability engage and communicate effectively with young people and to deliver small group activities.
  5. A sound understanding of how to respond safely and with a trauma informed approach to risk around suicidality and complex trauma.
