Senior Youth Mental Health Clinician – KEYS out of home care initiative

  • Providing mental health assessment, consultation and intervention as part of the KEYS initiative: a new approach to supporting highly vulnerable young people in the out-of-home care system.
  • Three year fixed term (with possibility of extension)
  • part-time role | 8 days per fortnight (will consider smaller EFT fractions)
  • Based in Sunshine (and outposted to St Albans)

Your new team

Orygen Specialist Programs (OSP), a program of The Royal Melbourne Hospital, provides mental health services to young people aged 15-25 (soon to be 12-25) and their families/carers in Melbourne’s northwest and western suburbs.

The KEYS (Keep Embracing Your Success) initiative is a cooperative of providers, including Anglicare Victoria, YSAS and VACCA, and Orygen, delivering a ‘treatment’ residential care model to young people in out-of-home residential care facility in St Albans.  At Orygen, the KEYS senior mental health clinician sits within the HYPE program.

 Your new role

 A multidisciplinary role open to Grade 3 Registered Psychiatric Nurses and Grade 2 Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Psychologists. In this role, you will:

  • provide mental health consultation, assessment and recommendations for the young people in the KEYS program, as well as treatment to those who may benefit from direct treatment;
  • In collaboration with a HYPE Clinical Specialist, support the facilitation of a group reflective practice for the interdisciplinary team;
  • Provide inclusive and sensitive practice to young people and their families/carers from Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, CALD and LGBTQIA backgrounds.

The KEYS mental health approach will draw on several frameworks – including ERIC (Emotional Regulation Impulse Control) and TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention), integrated with HYPE’s model of Relational Clinical Care.

About You:

  • Registration and qualifications in a relevant area of practice (see position description for details);
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in clinical practice within the mental health field, including young people experiencing mental health disorders;
  • Experience providing mental health assessment, risk assessments, diagnostic formulations and treatment with young people who experience complex emotional, relational and behavioural difficulties and their families and carers;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with young people and their families;
  • Capacity to develop effective working relationships, collaborations and partnerships with a range of services such as primary care, child protection, family services and AOD agencies;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as well as abilities in problem solving and negotiation.
